Embrace Culture - Chinese New Year
Group 2: Chinese New Year
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Chinese New Year is a significant traditional festival with a long history and rich cultural significance. It is an important moment for families to come together in their hometown to celebrate the joy of the festival, worship ancestors and pay respect to the gods, while participating in customary activities, like house cleaning, posting Spring Festival couplets, hanging red lanterns, making dumplings, and exchanging red envelopes. People also celebrate the arrival of the festival by holding traditional events such as Lantern Festival, flower markets, and lion and dragon dances. Inspired by the Chinese New Year, this group of students designed a series of festive and joyful jewellery.
PROJECT CONCEPT
CHEUNG Mei Ki — Chinese New Year Flowers The theme of this design is based on peach blossoms and tangerines.
CHEUNG Siu Ching — Lion Head "Cai Qing" This lion head pendant is inspired by lion dance performances and the tradition of "picking green" with lion heads, representing good luck.
LEUNG Suet Wing — Lantern My work is themed on the lantern of Chinese New Year as design elements.
CHAU Pak Chun — Spring Festival Couplets (Hui Chun) I designed my work based on the traditional Chinese New Year's Spring Festival couplets, on which auspicious phrases are written as a form of calligraphy.
