Village of Memories
Background
The topic of investigation is to consider what is the meaning of social-living, in the context of a Residential Care Home for the Elderly. This typology of the programme lies at the intersection between “House” and “Housing” in that the confrontation of the individual to the collective is amplified. The idiosyncrasies, habits and desires of the singular have to be reconciled with the “challenges” of Social Living - logistically, socially, experientially etc. The challenge lies in creating architectural solutions that balance individuality with collective living, creating an environment where the elderly can and should live both independently and as part of a community.
CONCEPT
This Elderly home project, inspired by traditional Hong Kong villages, offers four distinct living styles to enhance elderly residents' quality of life. By creating inviting communal spaces that promote social interaction and connection, the design fosters a supportive, inclusive environment where residents can thrive, engage with others, and enjoy a sense of belonging and well-being in their community, ultimately enriching their daily lives and experiences while ensuring their independence and dignity in a nurturing atmosphere tailored to their needs.
