Balance In Liquid Modernity

Background

The Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman introduced the concept of “Liquid Modernity” in his book in 2000, describing how modern society has shifted from a solid state to a fluid one. This transformation requires us to constantly reshape ourselves to adapt to changing environments, letting go of established identities to embrace new beginnings.

CONCEPT

In a constantly changing society, balance often exists only in fleeting moments. Therefore, we should cherish this rare moment of balance. I focus my art works on the core concept of “Balance” and use the Tai Chi ( 太極 ) symbol, which represents the duality of things, as my source of inspiration and artistic symbol. The philosophy behind this symbol signifies that everything is in a state of cyclical change, emphasizing the importance of going with the flow and pursuing dynamic balance. My three works will reinterpret the new meanings of balance in a liquid society and its multifaceted nature with the Tai Chi symbol.
