The Mermaid & Dedication

The mermaid in Western Folklore and Chang'e in Chinese Mythology

Background

The fusion of different cultures has always been a subject of exploration that has both intrigued and bewildered people. Various cultural characteristics penetrate and combine with each other, and finally merge into one. In order to explore this theme, I have used two mythical characters, the mermaid in Western folklore and Chang'e in Chinese mythology respectively. I believe the two have something in common and can simultaneously express the uniqueness of combining Chinese and Western elements.

CONCEPT

I have designed the character using elements of the mermaid from Western folklore and Chang'e from Chinese mythology. In Chinese mythology, Chang'e is described as a goddess holding a ribbon. This ribbon is called the "Thread of Immortality". Chang'e shows her divine power and benevolence through this ribbon. Her ribbon is a unique feature in her story, which serves as one of the inspirations for my design. Another inspiration is drawn from the mermaid in Western folklore. She is often associated with pearls. Pearls represent wealth, holiness and blessings, and also symbolize the mermaid's unique identity and power.
