Background

Through my research, I discovered that contemporary young people suffer from a range of sleep problems. As their living habits, work or studying hours are rather irregular, this leads to poor sleep quality, insomnia, or sleep deprivation. These sleep problems affect their daily life and emotions, and can even lead to mental illness. Hence, I aimed to create a tranquil and natural sleeping space within a university library setting. Therefore, by incorporating natural elements like landscapes, the design aims to connect users with nature and evoke feelings of nostalgia, tranquility and balance. The choice of materials like acrylic and polypropylene, along with inspiration drawn from rice terraces and Shan shui painting, adds a serene and harmonious touch to the environment. The inclusion of single-person sleeping positions and separate chairs allows for individual rest and relaxation without disturbance.

CONCEPT

My idea is to make young people feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable when using my designs. That is why I have chosen some elements of nature, such as landscapes. I think landscapes as a design element can establish a connection with nature as these help users feel the beauty and tranquility of nature. In addition, landscapes often evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for nature, as well as feelings of tranquility and balance. The multi-purpose sofa can be used by more than one person for relaxing, socialising and lounging. Users can lean on the backs of the mimosas at different heights for relaxation. The multifunctional sofa also offers a sleeping position for a single person, so users can use this area for sleeping.
