Platform 13
The new building is added on the old one, using the roof space to provide a comfortable place for the elderly to carry out activities, increase social relations with surrounding residents, enhance community participation, and promote cultural exchanges.
Background
The community structure on 13th Street results in very low community cohesion and participation. The main users are original elderly residents, ethnic minorities and new immigrants. Due to differences in language and culture, they have less social interaction. In the absence of an inclusive environment for activities, they lack social relationships with the community. In addition, the rooftop space of the tenement building is filled with rooftop rooms, resulting in a very dirty and messy environment on the rooftop space. Find existing spatial resources in high-density urban development to develop comfortable spaces to meet the social needs of the elderly on 13th Street, increase community participation, and promote cultural integration.
CONCEPT
The Hong Kong government usually develops the area by demolishing old buildings and rebuilding new ones. I try to find another development model, which is to preserve the original buildings, develop the existing building space, and use light steel structures to complete the construction of new buildings, thereby optimizing the existing roof space. By connecting the roof space of the buildings, the scope of activities is expanded, thus providing more activity opportunities for the elderly residents of Thirteen Street, integrating into the community, creating value, and promoting cultural integration.
