Perceptions of Death
Use the contrasting Eastern and Western cultural perceptions of bats as a metaphorical representation of the differing Eastern and Western attitudes towards death.
Background
Bats are often imbued with symbolic associations of death across many cultures, owing to their nocturnal habits and connections to darkness and vampirism. However, the broader cultural symbolism of death itself can vary significantly between Eastern and Western traditions. In Western cultures, death is frequently perceived as an absolute end, while Eastern worldviews tend to frame it as a natural part of the greater life cycle. This divergence in beliefs highlights the diversity of perspectives on this universal human experience.
CONCEPT
Bats are frequently imbued with symbolic associations of death across diverse cultural contexts, owing to their nocturnal nature and connections to darkness and vampirism. However, the broader cultural meanings ascribed to death itself exhibit notable variations. Western perspectives often interpret death as an absolute end, whereas Eastern worldviews, such as that of Chinese culture, tend to frame it as an integral part of the cyclical nature of life. These contrasting views on the symbolism of death align seamlessly with the thematic elements of my design, which draws inspiration from the darkness and mystery embodied within the Gothic architectural style.
