Absurd Rituals

Meaning of life

Background

This project explores the contrasting funeral cultures of Tibetans and sacrificial cultures of Mayans, highlighting the Tibetan emphasis on harmony with nature and the Mayan practice of human sacrifice. By examining the value of life, moral boundaries, and cultural differences, it prompts deep reflection on the human-nature relationship and the meaning of life. The superiors hold absurd rituals for the inferiors, out of respect for the deceased and to promote the vitality of the nation. However, these rituals are completely detached from the real needs of the audience, and are solely based on the subjective will of the superiors. As a result, the inferiors have yearned for freedom and status their whole lives, as they seek to reinvent themselves.

CONCEPT

The total look represents freedom and liberation. It draws inspiration from the Eight Treasures and uses fish symbolism to represent compassion and transcendence. The lip makeup signifies freedom, while the hairstyle incorporates animal feathers and tree elements to symbolize the interdependent relationship between humanity and nature, blending the development of the natural ecosystem. In my designs, I have incorporated the following elements: - Utilization of Thangka imagery as the print pattern, reflecting Tibetan cultural elements - Adoption of Tibetan fashionable asymmetric sleeve designs - Use of jewelry such as mask necklaces, inspired by Mayan cultural aesthetics - Incorporation of Mayan blue as the representative color By seamlessly fusing these design elements originating from diverse cultural traditions, I have ultimately showcased a series of designs that exude an exotic, yet modern and fashionable sensibility.
