Absolute loyalty

Obedience to the rules and laws set by the Queen.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The scene where the soldiers painted the roses white struck a chord with me as they were afraid of making a mistake. This scene reminds me of the current state of the society where people are afraid to disobey authority figures like the Red Queen. Despite the Queen’s inhumane treatment, they lack the courage to stand up for their rights. This scene is all too familiar to me, as I have seen it plays out in reality where office workers are mistreated by their clients and bosses, yet they feel powerless to disobey them. Similarly, students are punished by teachers due to their disobedience to the arbitrary rules set up by schools. The society requires us for compliance which has taken away our rights and choice to say no.

PROJECT CONCEPT

The playing cards in the novel are depicted as soldiers who follow the rules and laws given by the Red Queen without question. Their compliance to the Queen is absolute, and they are not allowed to express themselves as it will be seen as disobeying the Queen. To convey the idea of absolute compliance, my design features the classic soldier look, which is synonymous with unquestioning obedience. The scene where the cards were scolded by the queen for painting the roses in the wrong color inspired me to incorporate roses into the design. The design also features red paint dripping down from the roses, symbolizing the bloodshed that resulted from the cards painting the roses wrongly. My design aims to express the idea that absolute compliance is not always desirable.
